USCG SAFE BOATING CLASSES
PLANNED FOR THE YEAR

Boat and water safety has hit a new level of awareness, new laws and regulations could surprise many boaters this year. New regulations now make a mandatory Safe Boating Certificate necessary for any person born after January 1st, 1982, who wishes to operate a vessel with an engine greater than 25 horsepower. Also, anyone planning on operating a Personal Water Craft (PWC) or jet-ski is required to have a Safe Boating Certificate at all ages.
Word of new regulations in other states has placed extra emphasis on safe boating, for example. The state of New Jersey has recently passed legislation that requires by 2009 all boaters to have taken a Safe Boating Course and have a Safe Boating Certificate in possession while operating any vessel in the state of New Jersey.
Safe Boating Certificates are easy to obtain and take only eight hours of class time. The classes meet in various locations spring through late summer and are given by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Wilkes Barre Flotilla 15-03. These classes have a small charge of twenty-five dollars per person with a slight reduction possible on family plans.
The eight hour course consists of the America’s Safe Boating course with the course you will receive a Safe Boating Manual, CD-rom with powerpoint presentation for study and a USCG certificate upon completion. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will accept the USCG certificate and provide the state card at request and at a $10.00 charge.
The Wilkes Barre USCG Auxiliary has set up several classes in a variety of areas in hopes of accommodating the boating public. The mission of our USCG auxiliary Flotilla is to educate the public in safe boating and supply the means for a safe boating experience, stated Raymond Hillman FC Flotilla 15-03 Wilkes Barre PA. Carol Bender, Flotilla public education person asks that interested personnel call and reserve their place in the classes. As classes will be filling fast and are limited.
